DCI Sam Tyler of Greater Manchester Police, after being hit by a car in 2006, found himself in the year 1973. There, he worked for Manchester and Salford Police CID as a DI under DCI Gene Hunt. Tyler faced various culture clashes, most frequently regarding differences in his approach to policing compared to that of his colleagues. It was unclear whether he really had travelled back in time, is in a coma in 2006 and imagining his experiences, or if he is mentally unstable.
Sam eventually woke in his hospital room in 2006, to find his mum sat by his bedside and Morgan, the surgeon, looking down on him. He returned to his life as a 21st-century DCI but quickly found that he cannot relate to any of his colleagues. He even accidentally cut himself without feeling any pain, reminiscent of when he cut himself with a razor but felt the pain, in 1973. Remembering an observation that "You know you're alive when you can feel", Sam went up on to the roof of the station. After looking out over Manchester for a long while, he took a running leap from the roof… and appeared back in 1973, just in time to save his colleagues.
Now, two years later, after a near-fatal train crash in inner-city Manchester, 24 year old off duty DC Sally Hartford has found herself in the same predicament. She had been on her way home, when the crash occured and when she woke up, she was being shaken by a train guard in 1974. Scared and alone, she makes her way towards Manchester and Salford Police CID Department, following the directions on a slip of paper in her pocket, and the only man who knows what she's going through, Sam Tyler.
